HARRISBURG PA - Pennsylvania State Police are appealing to Pottstown residents and those in surrounding areas to help them in uncovering a “sophisticated,” gold-related fraud.
Its perpetrators so far have targeted victims across several states and stolen more than $6.5 million, troopers reported Friday (Sept. 25, 2026). The scammers have succeeded, in part, because they are impersonating federal law enforcement agencies.
State police add they believe there may be additional victims who are not identified.

How the Scam Works
Investigators say the scam typically begins with a pop-up that appears on a potential victim’s computer. He or she is then contacted by individuals who claim to represent federal officials.
Scammers tell victims that their identity or Social Security number has been connected to criminal activity. They likely will also claim their bank accounts or personal information have been compromised.
Victims are then instructed to withdraw money from their accounts, purchase gold bars or coins, and turn the gold over to a courier for “safekeeping.” The gold disappears with the courier; victims suffer the loss.

State Police are asking anyone who may have been targeted by this scam during August or September, and instructed to purchase or provide gold to a courier, to contact investigators. They are requested to call Trooper Eric Dreisbach at 570-560-0625, and refer to case PA 2026-1166513.
Two individuals have already been taken into custody. Troopers stopped their vehicle - a silver 2025 Honda Accord bearing California registration 9TTS143 - on Sept. 10 (Thursday) while traveling on Interstate 80 in Union County. Others are being sought.
