VALLEY FORGE PA - A special service and luncheon to commemorate National Vietnam War Veterans Day is scheduled for Saturday (March 29, 2025) at Washington Memorial Chapel at Valley Forge.
The event starts at 11 a.m. in the chapel - 2000 Valley Forge Park Rd., King of Prussia - and will be immediately followed by a barbecue luncheon. Both are free, and open to men and women who served during the Vietnam War. Advance reservations are requested, and can be made online.
The chapel’s Veterans Commission reports the event occurs on the day that officially acknowledges the war’s end in 1973, as remaining U.S. combat troops were withdrawn from Vietnam. It is intended to “recognize the courage, sacrifice, and bravery” of all those in service during the period.Prayers, scripture readings, and hymns will be offered in tribute to Vietnam veterans and their families. Also, a keynote address will be delivered by U.S. Navy veteran Gardiner Pearson. It will reflect on the service and legacy of Vietnam veterans, and the importance of remembering their contributions to our nation.
Pearson, a junior officer in the U.S. Navy from 1967 to 1970, was stationed aboard the USS Crockett. At the time it was operating on the Cua Lon River, providing support for military operations during the war.
The meal, a “Revolutionary BBQ,” will be hosted by rector the Rev. Tommy A. Thompson in the chapel’s Patriots Hall. For more information about the event, send an e-mail to the Veterans Commission at veteranscommission@wmchapel.org.
