Proper Med Disposal Helps Lower Frederick Environment

LOWER FREDERICK PA - Unused medications and other pharmaceuticals pose a danger to the environment if flushed down the toilet or put out in the trash, experts agree. To keep Lower Frederick’s water, soil, and other natural assets clean, the township Environmental Advisory Council on Friday (March 21, 2025) suggested ways to deal with unwanted meds.

The best method, it says, is to deposit them with an agency prepared to handle them properly. At the top of the council’s list is the township itself, which maintains a medication drop-off box in the municipal building at 53 Spring Mount Rd.

Many unused and expired pharmaceuticals can be left in the secure box for later suitable and safe disposal. It’s available during regular business hours. Because meds “often pass through wastewater treatment systems unaffected,” the council says, using drop-off boxes avoids that problem.

The council also offers other recommendations by linking to a helpful federal Environmental Protection Agency webpage.

Additionally, several area municipal agencies - including the Lower Frederick Police Department - participate in the National Prescription Drug Take Back Day hosted locally by the Montgomery County District Attorney’s Office. This year’s list of participating agencies has not yet been announced, but the date has officially been set for April 26 (Saturday).

The DA’s Office also provides an online list of drug drop-off sites throughout the county.
